Ontario’s regulated online gambling sector began 2026 with a new benchmark, as total wagers for January climbed past $9.5bn and extended the market’s multi-year growth trajectory.

According to the latest monthly figures from iGaming Ontario (iGO), players placed $9.52bn in bets across licensed commercial platforms in January 2026. That volume stands 21.4% higher than the same month in 2025 and establishes a fresh record for monthly handle in the province’s open iGaming system.

Operators converted that wagering activity into $401.5m in non-adjusted gross gaming revenue (NAGGR). While that revenue total exceeded January 2025 by 22.2%, it trailed December 2025’s peak of more than $425m by 6%.

Casino Vertical Expands Its Lead

Ontario’s market, which launched in April 2022, continues to show a clear preference for online casino play. January figures reinforce that pattern.

Of the $9.52bn wagered during the month, $8.18bn originated from iCasino activity, equating to 86% of all bets placed. Sports betting represented $1.18bn in handle, while peer-to-peer poker contributed $156m.

Year-over-year comparisons show casino play accelerating faster than other segments. iCasino handle rose 25.6% compared to January 2025. Sports wagering, by contrast, recorded a marginal decline of roughly 0.25% over the same period.

Revenue trends followed a similar split. Online casino gaming produced $308.9m in NAGGR in January, reflecting a 33.7% annual increase. The casino segment accounted for 77% of all market revenue reported by iGO for the month.

Sportsbooks See Softer Returns

Sports betting operators generated $86.7m in revenue in January, representing a 5.8% decrease from January 2025.

The comparison is influenced by the strength of January 2025, when sportsbooks reported $92m in revenue — a total that remained unmatched until November. In January 2026, sports betting comprised approximately 22% of total regulated online gambling spending in the province.

User participation continued to grow alongside wagering volumes. The market recorded more than 1.32 million active player accounts during the month, up 19.9% from a year earlier. However, revenue per active account showed limited change on an annual basis, rising 2% to $303. Compared to December’s record average of $333 per account, the January figure was 9% lower.

Sustained Growth Following A Record 2025

The January data adds to a strong annual performance in 2025. Over the full calendar year, Ontario’s licensed operators processed more than $98bn in wagers and generated over $4bn in NAGGR.

With a 20% revenue share rate applied to operator earnings, the province collected more than $800m in tax revenue from regulated online gambling during 2025. An estimated $80m was added in January 2026 alone.

Handle has now surpassed $9bn in four consecutive months, and monthly revenue has exceeded $400m in each of the last three. The iGO reporting framework covers 48 licensed commercial operators running more than 80 approved real-money gambling websites. It does not include activity from the Ontario Lottery and Gaming (OLG) online platform. As of Feb. 25, 2026, OLG had not published its complete annual breakdown for the 2024–25 reporting period ending March 31, 2025.

The competitive landscape may soon expand. DAZN secured a license from the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) in January and plans to introduce DAZN Bet to the province in 2026. At the same time, several operators active in  are preparing for Alberta’s anticipated commercial iGaming rollout, currently expected around June or July, either as new market entrants or through a shift from grey-market operations.
